Megan Thee Stallion was granted a five-year civil restraining order against Tory Lanez following her testimony given in last week before a judge in Los Angeles. Megan had filed a restraining order against Lanez on Dec. 17, requesting that the Los Angeles Superior Court judge prevent Lanez from allegedly harassing Megan from prison through third parties while he serves a 10-year sentence in jail. Court documents allege that “despite being sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Ms. Pete, Mr. Peterson continues to subject her to repeated trauma and revictimization.”
According to court documents, Megan, 29, (real name Megan Pete) was granted a restraining order against 32-year-old Lanez (real name is Daystar Peterson) through Jan. 9, 2030. Per Billboard, the restraining order prohibits Lanez from any form of harassment or contact with Megan. Judge Richard Bloom emphasized Megan’s credible fear of violence and acknowledged the “significant ripple effect” of the 2020 shooting. The judge also noted that Lanez’s actions served “no lawful purpose.”
Before Judge Bloom via video, Megan expressed fear for her safety upon Lanez’s eventual release from prison: “I’m scared that when he gets out of jail, he’s going to still be upset with me. I feel like maybe he’ll shoot me again, and maybe this time I won’t make it. I haven’t been at peace since I was shot. I’m just tired of being harassed.” The judge confirmed the order on Thursday, Jan. 9 in the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County after Megan had “sustained burden of proof” in a compelling case, via Variety.
Lanez was convicted in 2022 on three felony counts related to the 2020 shooting. Lanez’s attorney, Michael Hayden, argued that the restraining order was an attempt to “chill free speech” and that Megan was misinterpreting the independent actions of internet bloggers. “This is about an attempt to silence opinions she disagrees with,” denying any ongoing threats from Lanez.
